The Ghostly Bear of Verdley Castle

Deep in the wooded hills near Fernhurst lie the remains of a medieval castle and one of the strangest ghost stories in Sussex.

A Forgotten Castle in the Woods

Hidden among the trees near Fernhurst are the remains of Verdley Castle is believed to have originated as a fortified hunting lodge in the thirteenth century. Although traditionally called a castle, its original purpose and appearance remain subjects of historical investigation.

Unlike the great ruins of Cowdray, Verdley is a much less familiar place.

Yet the castle has acquired an extraordinary reputation.

According to local folklore, its ruins are haunted by the ghost of a bear.

The Last Bear in England?

The legend claims that the last wild bear in England was killed at Verdley Castle.

The unfortunate animal is said to return to the site of its death, wandering among the ruins as though protesting its fate.

Some versions of the story associate the haunting with Christmas Day.

There is, however, no reliable historical evidence establishing that England’s last wild bear was killed at Verdley.

The story belongs to folklore rather than documented natural history.

A Castle with a Curious Past

Verdley Castle was a medieval site, with surviving remains dating from the thirteenth century.

The Fernhurst Society records its location in woodland near the later Verdley estate and also acknowledges the tradition of the ghostly bear.

What connection, if any, the castle originally had with bears remains uncertain.

Was the legend inspired by a real animal? Was it an explanation invented for an unfamiliar ruin? Or did an older story become attached to the castle over generations?

We may never know.

The Legend Lives On

Whatever its origins, the ghostly bear remains one of the more unusual tales associated with the Western Weald.

It combines an ancient ruined building, a mysterious woodland setting and the memory of an animal that once roamed Britain’s forests.

And somewhere among the trees near Fernhurst, the legend of Verdley’s ghostly bear survives.

Verdley Castle is a historic ruin rather than a managed visitor attraction. Anyone wishing to explore the surrounding area should check public rights of way and respect private land.
