Wine
Sussex is the UK’s only county with its own Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for both still and sparkling wines, and is home to the country’s largest concentration of vineyards, producing internationally acclaimed sparkling wine
In 2022, the UK Government (DEFRA) approved “Sussex” as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for wine under the UK Geographical Indication scheme. Only wines meeting the specification—including being made from grapes grown in East and West Sussex—may use the protected designation.
Sussex is widely recognised as the UK’s leading wine-producing county. It has:
- more vineyards than any other county in the UK,
- one of the country’s largest concentrations of wineries,
- a reputation built particularly on traditional-method sparkling wines
